“All Disease Begins in the Gut” was stated by Hippocrates, 460-370BC. It is a little known fact that about 85% of our immune system resides in our gut. These days, there is a constant assault on our gut flora from such things as chlorinated water, antibiotics, medications, processed food, toxins, c-sections, and formula to name just a few. Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride developed the GAPS diet to help her child heal. She then saw the connection to so many common issues such as autism, ADHD, dyspraxia, depression, eczema, and ear infections. Sharon Brown, a GAPS practitioner gave a wonderful lecture at the La Jolla Learning Center.
So I will tell you the beginning of the story….in the womb, mother passes IgG, an immunoglobulin to baby via the placenta since the baby’s immune system is not fully developed. In utero, the gut is sterile so as the baby passes through the birth canal, colonization of all the important organisms begins. Then comes colostrum. This colonization process continues for quite awhile and supports the development of a healthy immune system. Baby’s new ecosystem won’t need to be disrupted by antibiotics. If it does, we begin a gut rehab process right away with infant probiotics. There will be more to come on this topic soon. Have a great weekend!
