Osteopathic Medicine has always looked at the relationship of structure and function related to one’s health. Functional Medicine is a term referring to looking for underlying causes of disease. A leader in this manner of thinking is Jeffrey Bland, PhD. Here are a few thoughts I enjoyed from his last conference:
“The coming era of genomic medicine requires that healthcare practitioners develop technical skills to improve the management of aging and chronic disease, incorporating information about patient’s genetic tendencies, environment, diet (information or disinformation for the body), and lifestyle choices in the individualization of prevention and treatment strategies. “The interaction of our environment with our genes can affect our health positively or negatively.”
“Your book of life in 23 chapters is expressed differently in different environments”
“Epigenetics is a term for heritable genetic modification that is not attributable to change in the DNA sequence. In addition to change in genetic sequence it includes any process that alters gene activity with out change in the DNA sequence.”
“Genetics confess predisposition, not predestination.”
“Future therapies will be built from a new paradigm. Food and lifestyle contain information for our genes.”
